Make Some Noise for Safety

Some outdoor sports put us in harm’s way, and life is unpredictable. This air horn might be something worth taking with you the next time you head into the great outdoors.

It’s made by Falcon Signal Horns, and it packs quite a punch. With one little burst, I was convinced that it could be heard from a long distance, and if my dog’s reaction is any guide, it would deter animals that might be acting in a threatening manner.

I can see how this could be useful for urban and suburban outings, like running and bicycling, to attract attention if assaulted or to deter any dogs or other animals that might come after you. And in the boonies, it might be just the thing to run off a nasty bear or wildcat or to help lead rescuers to you if you were lost or injured.

They say its 112-decibel blast can be heard up to 1/2 mile away, and it’s completely safe for the ozone. It’s self-contained, requires no batteries, and has a small Velcro strap. And of course, it’s easy to use. Just push the button on top. The button is the topmost thing on the horn and has no guard or shroud around it, so it’s very easy to push in a pinch.

And that may be the only possible downside to this. If you’re a hunter, photographer, or wildlife watcher who relies on stealth, you’ll want to make sure you don’t pack or carry this horn in such a manner that the button can be pushed by mistake. An unintentional blast could send critters scrambling away from you, but that may be a risk worth taking if a small, portable air horn might save your life.
