Mossberg Patriot Single-Shot Sled (Short-Action) for Illinois Deer Hunters
Adam Scepaniak 01.03.24
A new Mossberg Patriot Single-Shot Sled has been announced to convert traditional bolt-action rifles into single-shots. This might sound like backward progress, but for many hunters in Illinois, new legislation was passed which forced them to revert back to single-shot rifles; leaving their traditional bolt-action rifles (with detachable box magazines) useless. So, while primarily for Illinois deer hunters, this new Mossberg Patriot Single-Shot Sled will allow hunters to deploy Patriot rifles they already own even with evolving hunting laws.

The Mossberg Patriot Single-Shot Sled was designed to help comply with the law that became effective in Illinois on January 1, 2023, regarding single-shot capacity when used in place of the standard drop-box magazine. Laws and regulations are always subject to change, but this is an effective solution for many Mossberg firearm owners for the time being. Hopefully things go back to normal, but if not, Mossberg has provided hunters with a solution.

North Haven, Connecticut – O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc., releases the Mossberg Patriot™ Single Shot Sled for use with all short-action calibers in Mossberg’s current lineup of Patriot bolt-action rifles. A new Illinois law went into effect on January 1, 2023, and this factory-authorized single shot accessory may give deer hunters in Illinois an additional option as to using their Mossberg Patriot rifle.
The sled is designed to limit the capacity of short-action Patriot rifles to a single shot when used in place of the standard box magazine. Compliant cartridges, pursuant to Illinois Public Act 102-0932, include the following straight-walled cartridges offered in the Patriot series: 350 Legend, 450 Bushmaster, and the recently introduced 400 Legend. Note: Laws and regulations are always subject to change, and you should confirm with your local law enforcement.
With Illinois ranking as one of the top whitetail hunting states, the use of the new Patriot Single Shot Sled provides hunters the option to take centerfire rifles afield when deer hunting.
Again, hopefully this is not a law that “sticks” for Illinois residents, but we are happy to see that Mossberg is being clever and thinking of their customers. Now, they can still deploy and hunt with the Patriot rifles that they may already own with no weird or difficult gunsmithing tasks required. Simply change the magazine. As always, let us know all of your thoughts in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback.
