POTD: The Most American 22LR – The American 180 Automatic Rifle

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have the most American 22 rifle there ever was. This is the American 180. The American 180 is a .22 rimfire submachine gun designed for law enforcement sales, but it also gained popularity as a recreational firearm. It has a high firing rate of 1200-1500 rounds per minute and can use drums with capacities ranging from 177 to 275 rounds. The intention behind its development was to utilize the .22LR cartridge, which offered minimal overpenetration risk and easy control. Although the American 180’s ballistic effectiveness may be limited, its ability to deliver multiple accurate shots compensated for this drawback. Despite some law enforcement agencies purchasing these guns, their popularity remained low, and production ceased in 1986 due to the ban on manufacturing new civilian machine guns.
