POTD: Two Barrels Instead of One – Nagant Model 1877
Sam.S 05.15.23
Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have a very cool double-barreled pistol that was actually well-liked. This is the Nagant Model 1877. The Nagant Model 1877 is chambered for the Belgian 9.4 cartridge and uses a rolling block action. This pistol is a rolling block action because the Berlgian-based Nagant brothers made plenty of lucrative deals with the Remington brothers for their rolling block patent and license. Basically, the brothers Nagant would produce various rolling block rifles for Europe at large and the Nagant brothers could use the patent as they saw fit. The Model 1877 is one result and it was used by the Belgian Gendarmerie who by most accounts loved and enjoyed these pistols.
“The Model 1877 Gendarmerie pistol was manufactured for and used by the Belgian Gendarmerie up to at least 1901. Emile and Leon Nagant held exclusive rights to manufactured handguns for the Belgian government up to that year. The upper left side of the frame is marked “BREVET REMINGTON” over the serial number, and the right side is marked “BREVET/NAGANT” and “E.M. &L NAGANT/LIEGE” in a circle. There are Liege proofs throughout, and the matching serial number is marked on the left side of the barrel lug, barrel, and frame along with the breechblock, both hammers, and butt. A wooden tampion with leather strap is included.”
