AllOutdoor Review: Fire & Smoke Society – Super Bird Seasoning
Sam.S 01.12.23
Here at AllOutdoor, we focus on…well…the outdoors. This includes every possible facet that any outdoorsman or outdoorswoman may find themselves taking part in. One common feature of the site is hunting stories, hunting gear, and the results of the two. This means that between a lot of us AllOutdoor employees, we harvest a good and plenty of wild game. I am sure that each of us has our favorite recipes or spices for each type of game we bring home to our family and table. When Fire & Smoke Society reached out to us we were excited and pleased by the opportunity. I know that Editor Adam Scepaniak and I are huge foodies so this was a pleasant surprise. The company has a neat story of like-minded folks who enjoy the art of grilling and cooking in general that wanted to lend a variety of spices and recipes to the world at large. Let’s dive into my review of one of their seasonings, the Fire & Smoke Society Super Bird Seasoning!

Specifications: Fire & Smoke Society Super Bird Seasoning
Fire & Smoke Society catalog a wide variety of spices, seasonings, and rubs (something like 26 and counting). They also have a very good blog for lack of a better term that houses a whole host of different recipes that utilize their spices, seasonings, and rubs. They also sell spice bundles for certain types of situations such as holiday gift-giving bundles, bbq bundles, and their best seller bundle. As far as this article is concerned they offer three different “bird” seasonings and their Super Bird Seasoning is one of them.
- Container Size: 8.5 oz
- Ingredients: Salt, spices (including black pepper, coriander, thyme and oregano), dehydrated garlic, brown sugar, paprika, lemon peel, citric acid and not more than 2% tricalcium phosphate added to prevent caking. MSG Free, Gluten Free
- Flavor Profile: Warm red spices and a whiff of lemon zest create the perfect, all-purpose blend for any cut of chicken. Meet your new poultry go-to.
- Geared Towards: Poultry and Grilled Vegetables
- No Artificial Ingredients
The MSRP of the Fire & Smoke Society Super Bird Seasoning is $9.99 (as of writing this it is on sale at $7.99). This price is pretty fair and typical of quality pre-mixed spices in the form of seasoning so I personally find no gripes with it, especially if it is of quality components. This particular seasoning comes in an 8.5 oz container.

First Impressions: Fire & Smoke Society Super Bird Seasoning
I had known of Fire & Smoke Society but just that: known. I had never seen their offerings in person nor had I ever tasted or knowingly tried them. Starting with the Super Bird Seasoning label I found it to be creative and eye-catching; definitely a good thing for sales from a shelf. Beyond its unique and pleasant appearance, it is obvious (in a good way) and descriptive. If the title of the seasoning did not convey its purpose the label mentions “poultry seasoning”. The side of the label repeats the “tastes great on” and “flavor profile” bullet points. The back of the bottle has an easy-to-read nutrition and ingredients list. The bottle and cap themselves seem to be of quality construction. It is tougher than it is soft. In other words, it will not easily cave in with the outside press of a finger. The cap itself is a flip-open type with only one option for “serving size” for lack of a better description. No smaller or wider holes, just regular-sized ones.
Cooking & Taste: Fire & Smoke Society Super Bird Seasoning
When I received the Fire & Smoke Society Super Bird Seasoning I was excited because I knew I could use it during the coming grouse hunting season. Luckily for both the seasoning and myself, the grouse population was noticeably up this year in Minnesota, or at least they were more active. Just about everyone who went out to hunt at our cabin came back with one or two. This was such a boom compared to other years that we decided to have one big grouse feast for supper one night.
Most of the grouse in the pan was seasoned with salt, pepper, or a combination of both. I had the Fire & Smoke Society Super Bird Seasoning on hand just for this sort of occasion so I put a decent amount to thoroughly cover (but not drown) my grouse breast. The pan also had a good bit of onions for added flavor and volume.
Taste wise I was surprised at the Fire & Smoke Society Super Bird Seasoning. I say that because whenever I would look at the bottle it would invoke childhood memories of my father throwing Lawry’s seasoned salt on everything. It was not an overly salty seasoning (I would say just right in that department). I definitely could taste the thyme in there from to time but I would think any more than this would be too dominant. It had a pleasant sort of tang to it. Tang in the sense that the sour from the lemon made an appearance but in a good and inviting way. It leaned into that lemon pepper flavor you might find on dry-rubbed chicken wings.
Final Thoughts: Fire & Smoke Society Super Bird Seasoning
The Fire & Smoke Society Super Bird Seasoning is one of many different seasonings that they offer. Although this specific one is not one that fits my personal normal taste profile, I do not mind the thought of having it on hand. I can see it being very good on chicken wings, a roasted turkey, or even a fish like salmon. The salt and pepper properties are not overpowering which is a pleasant surprise because most seasonings have no choice but to tip one way or the other. The tangy taste that comes from the lemon peel really is the highlight but I should say it is not super strong. I personally do not like a lot of sweet or sour so take it from me when I say this has the perfect amount of the latter. I would recommend this to anyone looking to spice up their grill game!
Parting Note: Fire & Smoke Society has a whole book’s worth of recipes for their spices, seasonings, and rubs. A link to their recipe page is right here.
In closing, I want to say thank you to Fire & Smoke Society for allowing AllOutdoor and myself the opportunity to try out their Super Bird Seasoning. That is greatly appreciated.
