AllOutdoor Review: From Boy to Man – Boyds Henry H001 Stock & Forend

This has been a project I had toiled with myself for months. I wanted to take my Henry 22 youth rifle (specifically the Henry H001Y) and get a new stock and forend for it to make it more of an adult setup. My father bought me this 22lr when I was probably around 12 years old. Up until then, I had used his Coast to Coast Model 40 (basically a Marlin Model 60) for most plinking applications but it was always a little too cumbersome for my stature at the time and not exactly the style my old soul preferred. Fast forward to now and I still love my Henry 22. It has never failed me and I would never make changes I couldn’t undo but I felt it was time for an overall revamp to keep it coming off the rack. This started with getting a saddle ring receiver, a large lever loop, and of course this awesome Boyds Henry H001 Stock and Forend. Let’s dive right in!

Specifications: Boyds Henry H001 Stock & Forend

The Henry H001 Handguard and Buttstock are two separate products that are ordered and priced individually. They come in several varieties of wood and wood laminate with different finishes and color schemes. They also offer a whole host of laser engraving services and styles which piqued my interest, hence the presence of my stock and handguard. This particular one is the “Shady Camo” wood laminate. The stock and handguard design is only meant for the 22LR caliber according to the Boyds website.

The base MSRP for the handguard is $68.00 and the base for the buttstock is $90.00. There is obviously a myriad of options for different appearances and styles and they all carry their own add-on costs. For example, the “Shady Camo” color scheme that my samples have are $19 extra each and the laser engraving adds another $21 each. It is a lot in the end but the really exciting thing is that it is the way you want it. Does it fit though?

Installation: Boyds Henry H001 Stock & Forend

Installing these pieces was pretty painless for me since I’ve disassembled many Henry rifles. For a full installation-style article I recommend checking out the article linked here that I wrote over at TFB for Armorer’s Bench. Removal of the old handguard was simple enough in that I just had to unscrew the band screw and slide the band off. Installation of the new handguard however was a bit cumbersome since the hope for the band screw did not line up very well with the band’s hole. I took a drill bit that was a similar size as the hole and just wallowed it slightly so that the screw had the wiggle room necessary to bridge the two ends of the screw and band.

Removing the buttstock was extremely easy. All I had to do was remove the single buttstock screw located on the tang. The stock itself was removed very easily from the tang, but if anyone has any difficulty removing the stock, I recommend using a soft-faced hammer or the handle of a screwdriver to gently tap it from the tang. Installation of the new stock was simply the same steps in reverse. Slide the new stock on and install the tang screw.

Range Time: Boyds Henry H001 Stock & Forend

Actual hands-on range time with my old Henry 22 was very telling. It turns out it was not a real noticeable transition from a literal youth model to an adult-sized one. Aside from it just genuinely being a little gun the original stock is indeed shorter than most coming in at a 13-inch length of pull. Industry-standard for most adults is around 14 inches. The Boyds Boyds Henry H001 stock length for this specific model is apparently 13.75 inches. Factoring in the added length to the trigger this makes it roughly 14 inches of length of pull. The difference between the youth and Boyds is almost unnoticeable. I had to verify I was not missing anything by holding up a Henry classic 22 (same receiver and adult stock) at work and yeah, it felt extremely similar.

Shooting my old Henry 22 is more like riding a bike than actually riding a bike for me. The muscle memory from when I was a kid translated into the new stock and forend set with no issues. It continued to be a pleasant and pleasurable experience at the range. On top of all of that, thanks to Boyds, this does not need to be a permanent swap and I can always change it back to what it was for my children when I get there.

Conclusion: Boyds Henry H001 Stock & Forend

I was pleasantly surprised with this Boyds Henry H001 Stock & Forend set. It revealed to me that it was not as small as it had always felt. The comfort of the checkering is apparent and a welcome addition to my book. This stock and forend are a couple of many options on Boyds but this one is mine. Boyds continues to impress me with their quality, expediency, and great care taken to ensure a proper fit and finish with their products. I highly recommend checking them out and seeing if they have a product for you!
