POTD: Mann Accuracy Device – Early Cartridge Tester

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! I personally have worked in a firearm manufacturer’s factory and witnessed proof testing of barrels and actions, but this Mann Device is a whole different story. An early form of cartridge experimentation came to be in the form of this cut-down M1903 rifle with changeable barrels. This one offered long ago in Rock Island Auction Company’s catalog was fitted with a custom 30 carbine barrel.

“Named after the ammunition experimenter Dr. F.W. Mann, the Mann Device was used by the U.S. Ordnance Department and commercial ammunition manufacturers to test the characteristics of ammunition. Remington Model 03-A3 receiver and a massive Remington barrel. The barrel is stamped “C80597 / REMINGTON ARMS CO, INC., ILION, N.Y. MADE IN U.S.A. / F668-8601-63” and hand marked “RIFLE ACCURACY / CAL 30 CARB DN5050″. Standard Remington receiver markings with the bolt hand numbered to the gun. Smooth pistol grip configured stock.”
