Since 1987, The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has worked to raise $183 million to help Colorado elk habitats. Thanks to the 16,000 members in the state, the RMEF and its partner organizations worked to grant $1.3 million to aid these and many more animals.
The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and its partners allocated $1,311,336 of grant funding in Colorado to benefit wildlife habitat and scientific research. RMEF contributed $167,562 and leveraged an additional $1,143,774 in partner dollars.
RMEF & Partners Grant $1.3 Million for Colorado Elk Habitat
The $1.3 million raised by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation started as a direct donation of $167,562. From there, the RMEF’s partners raised an additional $1,143,774. Eighteen counties (Clear Creek, Costilla, Delta, Eagle, Garfield, Grand, Gunnison, Jackson, Las Animas, Mesa, Moffat, Montrose, Ouray, Pitkin, Rio Grande, Routt, San Miguel, and Saguache) will benefit from the grant through 10 individual projects. These projects include treating sick or damaged trees, as well as removing invasive species of weeds, and building wildlife water guzzlers in areas used by the elk in winter.
“We appreciate our state, federal and other partners who join us in seeing the importance of aspen restoration, invasive weed treatment, the installation of new wildlife water resources and other habitat enhancement work,” said Blake Henning, RMEF chief conservation officer. “There are also various important studies that will assist wildlife managers to learn more and better manage elk herds.”
As someone who lives in Colorado, I’m thankful that RMEF is working to fund these projects. Partners in these efforts include Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Bureau of Land Management, and many more. To show your thanks, head over to their website and find out the best way for you to help. Take a trip over to their social pages while you’re at it. RMEF can be found on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. Now go outside and do something fun!
