I know judging by the image above you’ll instantly want to call out “that’s a shotgun!” However, contrary to its ammunition usage and design, the new Rock Island VRF14 is in fact classified by the ATF as a “firearm” and not a “shotgun.” The VRF14 takes what I could consider being the natural endpoint of designs like the Mossberg Shockwave and Remington TAC-14 and turns the pump guns into some seriously powerful semi-auto goodness.

“The VRF14 is the first semi-automatic short-barrel firearm of its kind. It boasts a familiar pistol-style grip so you can shoot 12 GA shells from the hip.”

The new VRF14 adds to the already extensive lineup of the Rock Island “VR” series with a novel approach to 12-Gauge. Who really needs a stock when your end goal is self-defense in confined quarters? Who really needs a stock when your end goal is just blasting soda cans in the backyard on a hot summer day just to blow off some steam?

The VRF14 may not have a clear-cut purpose, but it definitely looks cool. At the time of writing, little is known about the VRF14 Firearm including its pricing and availability. What is known is that it will feature a 5-round detachable box magazine, have an overall length of 26-inches, a barrel length of 14-inches, and feature both top, bottom, and small left and right sections of Picatinny rail for mounting optics and accessories.

The VRF14 features a traditional pistol grip and the receiver is made from 7071 series aluminum while the fore-end is made from a tough polymer keeping the weight of the entire firearm at just 6.6-pounds. The new firearm will in fact be compatible with all of RIA’s VR-series 9 and 19-round magazines meaning that for a small price you can purchase a bit of extra capacity to keep the shooting going on longer.

The firearm is capable of using both 2-3/4″ as well as 3″ 12-Gauge shells. The rear of the firearm also includes an attachment point for a single-point sling to help enhance your stability while firing without a shoulder stock. To keep track of when the VRF14 will become available you can visit the Rock Island Armory website.
