POTD: Daisy Accidentally Made a Firearm – Caseless Daisy VL Ammunition

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have a curious and interesting inadvertence in firearms history. Daisy, known for making BB guns such as the infamous Red Ryder BB Gun, created a rifle that fired caseless Daisy VL ammunition. This rifle was the Daisy VL and as stated below by Cody Firearms Museum, it used caseless ammunition that was set off by compressed hot air. Later the ATF would decide this was a firearm.

“Caseless .22 made for the consumer market? By the same people that made Daisy BB guns? Yup. This ammo was made for the Daisy VL rifle in the late 1960s. Hot compressed air ignited the propellant that is attached to the base of the bullet. The ATF ruled it was a firearm and Daisy decided to stop production rather than to get a firearm manufacturer’s license.”
