POTD: Hammer-Fired Bolt Action? The Palmer Carbine

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have a historic oddity. Behold the Palmer Carbine! This handy rimfire rifle is bolt-action, but also uses a hammer to set off the cartridge. Think of it like a Spencer carbine and how it may be lever-action, but the hammer must be cocked separately. Cody Firearms Museum goes into more background below:
“The Palmer Carbine was an early bolt action gun patented in 1863 and produced by E.G. Lamson & Company. Lamson & Co. also made the Ball Repeating Carbine and filled an order for 50k 1861 Rifle-Muskets. The Palmer Carbine is a single shot design chambered for .56-50 rimfire. Although it is a bolt action it is still hammer fired. The U.S. government placed an order for 1,000 Palmers in 1864, but they were not delivered until after the war ended and saw no action. Shortly afterward they were sold as surplus and this one made its way to the Winchester collection and now it belongs to us.”
