POTD: The Confederate Colt – The Griswold & Gunnison

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! During the American Civil War, the country was split. Colt was on the union side; thus, their tooling, workers, and production all went to the union. Griswold & Gunnison was a product of necessity for the Confederacy. The arms they produced would fuel that side’s war machine. Revolvers referred to as Griswolds are a copy of Colt’s Patent, but who would enforce that infringement during wartime?
“The Griswold & Gunnison was the Confederacy’s most produced revolver. It is a .36 caliber copy of a Colt with a distinctive gunmetal frame. The factory was located in Griswoldville, GA where 22 of the 24 workers were enslaved. By the time it was destroyed during Sherman’s March to the Sea the makeshift factory had produced about 3,700 revolvers.”
