Springfield Armory’s Saint SBRs

The name Springfield Armory is synonymous with rifle making. The history of the original company goes way, way back. Then after that war that was supposed to end all wars, the company was essentially privatized into a commercial venture. SA is probably now best known for their line of M1A rifles, the civilian version of the M-14 battle rifle in 7.62 or 308 Winchester.

The company has stayed on the cutting edge by producing a comprehensive line of modern pistols in numerous models as well as other products. When public interest in AR-15 rifles gained speed years ago, Springfield Armory finally got into the game with their line of Saint MSRs. These have earned an impressive market share because of the innovative designs and high quality, and the Saint line continues to expand.

The current expansion comes with the introduction of the Saint AR-15 SBR and the Saint Edge AR-15 SBR, both chambered for the 5.56. The Saint SBR comes with a 11.5-inch CMV government profiled barrel with a Melonite finish in and out. Other features include a free float handguard with their own 4-point attachment to the barrel nut. The handguard has M-Lok slots. The top includes a Picatinny rail for optics and sight options.

Overall length runs 27.5 inches with a weight of 5 pounds, 9 ounces. The upper and lower units are hard-coat anodized aircraft grade 7075 T6 aluminum forgings. The trigger is nickel boron coated. Bravo Company hardware includes the pistol grip and the buttstock. The package includes one 30-round Magpul magazine and a soft rifle case. This rifle retails for $1049.00.

The Saint Edge version is very similar to the Saint SBR, but with custom features. This includes a trigger guard that’s integral to the receiver, match grade short-reset trigger, mid-size charging handle, and 90-degree ambidextrous safety. The Saint Edge retails for $1299.00. Complete specifications on these two new rifles can be seen on the SA web site at www.springfield-armory.com.

The Springfield Armory SBR rifles were designed from concept to production to be highly conducive to easy, smooth, and fast handling. Though these are perfect for military and law enforcement applications, many civilian shooters will also want to check these out.

Remember — these are SBRs or short-barreled rifles. This means the civilian purchaser will have to secure an NFA permit to legally own one of these rifles. Even jumping through those hoops should be worth the effort to have one of these SA SBRs in the corral.
