Review of Flextone Whitetail Freaks WTF Grunt’R Deer Call

I recently reviewed my current-favorite deer call: the Flextone Extractor. While using it this past deer season, I also tested Flextone’s Whitetail Freaks “WTF Grunt’R” deer call.

Here’s what Flextone says about the WTF Grunt’R:

Don and Kandi Kisky of Whitetail Freaks know the right call can save your hunt. After listening to countless hours of whitetail vocalizations, they found one area where traditional deer calls just weren’t getting it right: inflection.

Deer sounds aren’t monotone -– they fluctuate in pitch. Bearing this in mind, Flextone teamed up with Whitetail Freaks to create the ultimate grunt call. The WTF Grunt’R™ uses Inflection Chamber Technology to mimic the natural inflection in sounds made my rutting deer. Compress, expand or bend the chamber to instantly change the sound of your call. The chamber can even cut off airflow, creating the sound of an out-of-breath buck. And that’s not all: Tru-Touch® buttons for failure-proof doe and fawn sounds plus a durable snort wheeze chamber will enhance your call library even more.

With all the emphasis on inflection, I unfortunately couldn’t get much inflection out of this call… especially by compressing/bending the sound chamber. To get inflection in a grunt, it worked best to treat it just like any other call: Close my hand over the end of the call and open & close that hand to vary the tone of the call.

In short, the “Inflection Chamber” didn’t do its job for me. Heck, the folks selling the call don’t even use it. The promotional video below shows the call in use and never once does a hunter use the chamber to change the call’s tone.

Then we have the “Tru-Touch® buttons” which claim to provide “failure-proof doe and fawn sounds.” Yeah… no. You have to press the buttons very hard to get any change of tone, and when you do the sounds are harsh and unrealistic. Every time I tested the buttons, the sound was terrible and I quickly dumped this call and grabbed the Extractor.

I must admit to some consternation that one company can produce these two calls — one which has become my go-to deer call, and one I’m not likely to use again.

The snort-wheeze chamber of the Grunt’R works fine, and the rubbery body of the call prevents it from being noisy when bumped against other gear.

The lanyard isn’t typical, and the wider strap (as opposed to a thin cord) is certainly more comfortable on your neck during warm-weather hunts when your shirt may not have a collar. The call hangs just right with this lanyard — vertical with the mouthpiece upward. That’s a great feature.

Conclusion

All in all, the Flextone WTF Grunt’R deer call isn’t my favorite. That said, it’s not the worst I’ve ever used, either… and while it didn’t perform as advertised for me, there must be someone somewhere who can get good doe & fawn bleats out of it.
