AllOutdoor Review – HS Strut Double Deuce Box Call for Turkey Hunting
Keith Lusher 03.19.25

I have to admit – it’s been years since I invested in a new turkey call. Growing up in southeast Louisiana, I learned the power of a good call during that unforgettable morning when I single-handedly worked two gobblers in from a powerline clearing. It took over an hour, and those birds seemed like they were a mile away, but that cheap slate call I was using somehow piqued their curiosity enough to bring them within shooting range. Since then, I’ve gotten comfortable with my standard trio of calls. So, when I had the chance to try out the Double Deuce box call by HS Strut while scouting this season, I jumped at the opportunity to put it through its paces.

Field Use – Testing the Double Deuce Box Call
My testing ground was the Pearl River area in Southeast, LA. It was a foggy morning. I’d been out scouting for the upcoming season, hoping to pattern some birds before opening day.
Holding the Double Deuce in my left hand with the walnut paddle inside my right thumb and pointer finger, I started with soft yelps on the higher-pitched side. The sound carried well through the morning air with good clarity. Within minutes, I got a shock gobble from across a small slough, maybe 175 yards away.
I switched to the raspier, deeper-toned side and tried a series of slow yelps. The tom fired back immediately, closer this time. The double-sided feature proved useful, letting me shift tones without reaching for another call.
About 15 minutes later, the tom moved closer to where I was set up against a barbed wire fence. I tested the call’s range with quick cuts and clucks on the high side. When the bird went silent, I flipped to the raspy side and purred softly. Within minutes, a mature tom appeared, working along the edge of the slough.
Since this was just a scouting trip, I watched him approach to about 40 yards before he spotted me and putted off. But it proved the point – the Double Deuce could both locate birds and bring them in with decent hen talk.
Performance
The Double Deuce handles both locating distant birds and close-in calling. The high-pitched side works well for carrying distance, while the raspier side handles those softer purrs and clucks.
While it took a little time, switching between the two sides became fairly natural. The walnut-on-poplar construction creates good hen vocalizations.
Pros
- Dual-sided design is convenient
- Good volume for locating birds
- Decent tone that worked on a Pearl River gobbler
- Solid construction for the price
- Good value at around $25
Cons
- Needs protection from heavy rain
- Takes some practice to use effectively
Final Thoughts
The Double Deuce has earned a spot in my turkey vest. While it won’t replace a quality slate or mouth call in every situation, its versatility makes it worth carrying. For 25 bucks, you’re getting two sounds in one package. Is it the best call on the market? No. But for hunters on a budget who need a reliable box call for their next hunt, the HS Strut Double Deuce delivers solid performance. Just keep it dry, and it should last several seasons.
