AllOutdoor Review – Flint and Tinder Quilted Waxed Shirt Jacket
Patrik Orcutt 01.29.25

Flint and Tinder is a premium American clothing brand known for their quality craftsmanship and durable, timeless designs. Founded in 2012 by Jake Bronstein, the brand began as a Kickstarter campaign focused on creating well-made, American-manufactured underwear. Its ethos is rooted in sustainability, supporting quality domestic and foreign manufacturing, and crafting products that last. Flint and Tinder quickly expanded its range to include jeans, jackets, and other wardrobe essentials, earning a reputation for rugged, reliable apparel with a touch of classic style. Now a part of Huckberry, a retailer specializing in adventure-ready gear, Flint and Tinder continue to champion quality craftsmanship while catering to customers who value authenticity, functionality, and design. I reached out to Huckberry this past fall to see if they would be willing to send me a few items for review and sure enough they delivered the goods.
I’ve always been a fan of versatile outerwear, so when I came across the Flint and Tinder Waxed Quilted Jacket, I was immediately intrigued. The brand is well-known for creating rugged, stylish, and functional apparel, and this jacket seemed like the perfect blend of form and utility. After wearing it for a few months through varying weather conditions ( Winter months in Alabama and Boston), I feel like I’ve put it through its paces and can confidently share my thoughts.
The Flint and Tinder Quilted Waxed Shirt Jacket was provided by Huckberry for this review and while I’m allowed to keep this Jacket indefinitely, it wont change my option on any of their current or future offerings.

Aesthetics – Flint and Tinder Quilted Waxed Shirt Jacket
First off, let’s talk about the aesthetic. One of the first things I noticed about the Flint and Tinder Waxed Quilted Jacket is its understated yet rugged design. It has this timeless, outdoorsy vibe that works just as well in the city as it does in the woods. The waxed canvas exterior gives it a weathered look that’s sophisticated without being overly polished. Over time, the waxed fabric develops a unique patina, which makes the jacket feel more personal and well-worn in the best way. This is one of those pieces that gets better with age, and it’s a detail I really appreciate.
The quilted pattern is subtle but adds a layer of texture that’s visually interesting. It’s not too bulky, which was one of my initial concerns when I first saw it online. The stitching is neat and precise, giving it a high-quality appearance. I opted for the olive colorway because it’s versatile and pairs well with most of my wardrobe, but the jacket also comes in other classic tones like Grey and brown. Regardless of your choice, the colors are rich and have a slightly muted tone that’s easy to style.
The Fit – Flint and Tinder Quilted Waxed Shirt Jacket
In terms of fit, the jacket strikes a great balance between tailored and roomy, for the most part. I’m someone who likes my jackets to have a bit of structure without feeling restrictive. I ordered a size small based on the sizing chart on Huckberrys website even though I was pretty sure a Medium was going to be the right size. This jacket also runs a little bit larger which I knew from customer reviews. for reference, I’m five foot nine and around one hundred and seventy pounds with an athletic build. The size small was a good fit overall but I do wish I had gone with the Medium based on the length of the arms. The arms are just a half inch short for me but this is a common complaint I have seen online with this jacket from other owners.
Materials & Pockets – Flint and Tinder Quilted Waxed Shirt Jacket
One of the standout features of this jacket is its functionality. The waxed canvas exterior is water-resistant, which makes it a reliable choice for unpredictable weather. I’ve worn it during light drizzles and snowy mornings, and it kept me dry without any issues. It’s not fully waterproof, so I wouldn’t recommend it for a heavy downpour, but it’s more than adequate for everyday wear in damp conditions. The jacket also does a good job of blocking the wind, which is crucial for those blustery fall days.
The insulation is another highlight. The jacket is filled with PrimaLoft®, a synthetic insulation material that’s lightweight yet impressively warm. I’ve worn it in temperatures ranging from the mid-40s to low 30s Fahrenheit, and it’s kept me comfortable throughout. On colder days, I’ll layer it with a heavier sweater or thermal base layer, and it’s more than sufficient. What I love most about the insulation is how lightweight it is—the jacket feels warm without the bulk, which is a game-changer for me.
The interior lining is soft and adds a touch of coziness. I’ve found myself reaching for this jacket whenever I’m heading out the door because it’s so comfortable to wear. The pockets are also worth talking about . There are hand-warmer pockets on the front, which are lined with a soft material that feels great on chilly hands. There’s also an interior pocket that’s perfect for keeping essentials like my phone or wallet secure. The pocket placement is practical, and the zippers feel sturdy and reliable. I do with the front hand pockets were about 20 percent larger as they feel a little bit small to me, especially when wearing gloves. The placement of these pockets could also come forward about and inch.
Durability – Flint and Tinder Quilted Waxed Shirt Jacket
Durability is another area where this jacket excels. The waxed canvas feels robust and well-made, and the stitching has held up beautifully despite frequent use. I’ve worn it while hunting birds, during errands, and even while doing some light work, and it still looks fantastic. The wax coating does require a bit of maintenance to keep it water-resistant, but it’s a straightforward process. I’ve only had to reapply wax once, and it was surprisingly easy to do with a bar of fabric wax and a little patience. If you’re someone who values longevity in your clothing, this jacket is a solid investment.
Drawbacks – Flint and Tinder Quilted Waxed Shirt Jacket
That being said, there are a couple of minor drawbacks worth mentioning. First, the jacket’s wax is a bit sticky when it’s new. Its not really that bad but you will find some wax on your hands and if you own any cats or dogs, you can expect it to attract a lot of hair. Secondly, The cut and sizing of the jacket my not be for everyone, I would highly recommend trying this jacket on before buying it if you can. The Flint and Tinder Waxed Quilted Jacket isn’t cheap, but I believe it’s worth every penny. The quality, craftsmanship, and timeless design make it a worthwhile investment, especially if you’re looking for a jacket that will last for years.
Wrap up – Flint and Tinder Quilted Waxed Shirt Jacket
Overall, I’m incredibly impressed with the Flint and Tinder Waxed Quilted Jacket. It’s a well-thought-out piece that combines style, functionality, and durability in a way that few jackets do. Whether I’m out meeting friends for coffee, or tackling a chilly morning commute or hunting some birds after splitting some wood, this jacket has been a reliable companion.
If you’re on the fence about this jacket, I’d highly recommend giving it a try as the sizing is my biggest complaint. It’s one of those rare finds that truly delivers on its promises, and it’s a piece I’m genuinely excited to wear every time I put it on. Flint and Tinder has knocked it out of the park with this one, and I’m thrilled to have it as part of my wardrobe.
