The Model 686 Mountain Gun chambers 357 Magnum with a 7-shot cylinder, while the Model 629 offers 44 Magnum power in a 6-shot configuration. Both models feature:
- 4.13-inch tapered barrel for reduced carry weight
- Brass bead Patridge front sight
- TGW Bear Hug walnut grips
- Polished stainless steel construction
- Beveled cylinder front edge
- Chamfered charge holes
- Round butt frame
- No internal lock mechanism
The 686 model adds several premium features including a ball detent lockup on the yoke and an enhanced forcing cone, optimizing the revolver for serious 357 Magnum usage. Both revolvers maintain Smith & Wesson’s reputation for durability with all-stainless steel construction.
These Mountain Guns are designed for hunters, fishers, and outdoorsmen seeking a reliable sidearm that balances weight and power. The traditional round butt frame improves concealability, while the brass bead sight provides quick target acquisition in field conditions.
The polished stainless finish and Tyler Gun Works’ high-grade walnut Bear Hug grips give these working guns a classic aesthetic that matches their heritage. The elimination of the internal lock system will particularly appeal to traditional revolver enthusiasts.
For those familiar with the original Mountain Gun series, these new models represent a thoughtful evolution of the platform. The combination of proven features like the tapered barrel profile with modern improvements such as chamfered charge holes creates versatile revolvers suitable for everything from backcountry protection to recreational shooting.
