Suunto, a Finnish company renowned for its precision instruments, was founded in 1936 by Tuomas Vohlonen, an engineer and outdoorsman. Vohlonen’s invention of a liquid-filled compass marked the company’s entry into the market, setting a new standard for accuracy and reliability. Over the decades, Suunto expanded its product range to include dive computers, sports watches, and instruments for adventurers and athletes. The brand is celebrated for integrating advanced technology with robust design, catering to outdoor enthusiasts, divers, and sports professionals. Suunto remains a leader in the field, known for innovation and quality in navigational and sport devices.
“This long-awaited new launch is a natural step for Suunto as it brings together all we have learned throughout our almost 90 years of equipping people for adventures. Suunto Ocean is an ultimate device bringing together our heritage from compasses, dive computers, and outdoor watches. Designed, tested, and trusted by dive and sports pros.” Petri Lehtovirta, Suunto’s Head of Product
Suunto Ocean packs a battery life that won’t stop you from adventuring: its rechargeable battery delivers up to 60 hours of diving and 50 hours of continuous outdoor GPS tracking on a single charge. In daily mode, Suunto Ocean remains by your side for up to 26 days before needing a recharge, and when it’s time to power up, it does so quickly.
Crafted in Finland at Suunto’s factory, Suunto Ocean reflects their commitment to sustainability and transparency. Suunto is very proud to manufacture it with 100% renewable energy. With this new launch, they continue their efforts toward sustainability by calculating and verifying the carbon footprint of Suunto Ocean and offsetting it with Verified Carbon Units. 1 During its whole lifespan Suunto Ocean creates only 11.63 kg of CO2e – the equivalent of driving a combustion engine car for 70 km.2 The offsetting initiative involves planting coastal mangrove forests, which not only stabilize shorelines but also remove pollutants, improve water quality, and provide crucial nursery habitats for fisheries.
Suunto introduces a groundbreaking feature with the Suunto Ocean: the ability for users to view their underwater route in their Suunto app logbook after each dive. Additionally, entry and exit points may be marked in the logbook. This route-tracking functionality will be initially launched as a beta version and will continue to be developed further, ensuring users have access to the most innovative and user-friendly diving experience. All the logs from dive to sports and every day will be stored in one same app. For tracking sports and daily activity, the Suunto app offers a dedicated Training Zone where users can monitor their training load, progress, recovery, and sleep analysis. Additionally, users can leverage AI-based Suunto Coaches for personalized training insights. Partner services such as Strava, Training Peaks, and Komoot seamlessly connect users to their community, fostering competition and inspiring new adventures.
“Last year, we redefined our design direction, and the Suunto Ocean is a continuation of this transformation. It’s equally at home whether diving or doing any other outdoor sports. It not only performs great but also looks the part. And you can proudly wear it every day when preparing for your next diving trip or just dreaming about it.” Mikko Ahlström, Suunto’s Head of Design.
The Suunto Ocean will be available in three different versions, each compatible with a wide variety of accessory straps for dive, sports, and every day. It is set to hit selected markets for purchase in summer 2024.
