[NRAAM 2024] InfiRay Outdoor Hybrid Series HYL50W – 90 Hz Thermal
Paul B. 05.24.24
InfiRay Outdoor is always at the bleeding edge for thermal technology, for a simple reason, as their rep pointed out when I spoke to them “We are a technology company first, and an optics company second”. This allows them to operate with research and development in mind. InfiRay is also one of the largest OEMs for thermal cores, meaning if you own a competing product, there is a high possibility that your thermal is powered by an InfiRay core. InfiRay showed that business practice in action with the release of the new Hybrid Series HYL50W, – a high refresh rate 90 Hz display Thermal Weapon sight.

[NRAAM 2024] InfiRay Outdoor Launches Hybrid Series- HYL50W – 90 Hz Thermal
Refresh rate is the term used to describe how many times per second the display you are looking at updates the frame or picture that it is displaying. The faster the display is able to update each frame, the smoother the video will be. Most thermals operate with a 50 or 60hz display, meaning each second the display will have 50 or 60 frames. There is nothing wrong with a 50 or 60 Hz display, and it is plenty useable and been the industry standard, but where a higher refresh rate display will shine is when quickly panning across an area. Instead of a blurred image, the quality and sharpness will maintain throughout the movement. The InfiRay Hybrid Series- HYL50W is the world’s first consumer thermal to incorporate a 90hz display, and using it in motion is something you just have to experience for yourself.
The Hybrid HYL50W is the world’s first high-end thermal imaging scope boasting a remarkable 90Hz refresh rate. It offers unparalleled visual smoothness and clarity, featuring ballistic calculation and BDC reticles, and can be used use as a clip-on or stand-alone thermal riflescope. Through technological innovation, Hybrid HYL50W will bring an unprecedented observation experience to our users.
Powering a high refresh rate display is a whole other rabbit hole of information. To do so, you need a fast processor, a thermal core that is advanced enough to not “wash out” during fast transitions, a way to dissipate the additional heat, and engineer all of this for useable battery life. All while keeping the price competitive, so customers will still be able to buy it. InfiRay’s way of having the display automatically switch between 50 Hz for stationary use and seamlessly to 90 Hz for motion, is clever.
