AllOutdoor Review – Outdoor Research Alpine Onset Merino Quarter Zip

Outdoor Research is a Seattle-based manufacturer of technical apparel and gear for outdoor sports, They were formed back in 1980s after a climber was attempting a summit of Mt. Denali when he and his team had a failure of a set of gaiters that sent them packing back down the mountain. That climber was Ron Gregg and after just over a year, Ron would have started his own outdoor brand, Outdoor Research (OR). Back in 1980, their flagship product was an improved pair of gaiters, fixing the problems Ron had with older pairs. Today OR’s product line includes everything you would need for alpinism, rock and ice climbing, backpacking, paddling, and backcountry skiing and snowboarding. This particular review will focus on their Alpine Onset Merino Quarter Zip. The Outdoor Research Men’s Alpine Onset Merino Quarter Zip is a versatile and high-quality piece of outdoor apparel that promises to keep you warm, dry, and comfortable in a variety of conditions. Material and Construction – Alpine Onset Merino Quarter Zip

Alpine Onset Merino Quarter Zip

The Alpine Onset Merino Quarter Zip is constructed from a blend of 45% Merino wool, 45% polyester, and 10% spandex. This combination of materials brings together the best of both worlds. Merino wool offers natural moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating properties, ensuring you stay warm in cold weather and cool in warmer conditions. Polyester adds durability and quick-drying capabilities, while spandex provides excellent stretch and mobility. This also means you can feel free to throw this garment in the wash with all of your other cloths on a normal cycle and not worry about destroying the wool.

The quality of craftsmanship is apparent in the attention to detail. The seams are flatlock stitched to minimize chafing and irritation, making it comfortable for extended wear. The quarter-zip design allows for easy ventilation when you need it, and the high collar provides extra warmth and protection for your neck.

Performance – Alpine Onset Merino Quarter Zip

One of the standout features of the Alpine Onset Merino Quarter Zip is its exceptional moisture-wicking abilities. During outdoor activities, I found that it effectively pulled moisture away from my skin, keeping me dry even when I was sweating profusely. This is crucial for maintaining comfort and warmth in varying weather conditions.

The temperature-regulating properties of Merino wool were evident when I wore this quarter zip during cold mornings and warm afternoons in Glacier National Park. It helped to regulate my body temperature, preventing overheating while still keeping me warm when the temperature dropped. Whether I was hiking, or simply taking a brisk walk, the Onset Merino Quarter Zip provided consistent comfort.

Durability – Alpine Onset Merino Quarter Zip

While the polyester blend in the fabric contributes to the durability of the quarter zip, it’s important to note that Merino wool, while incredibly comfortable and functional, can be prone to pilling and snagging. After several uses and washes, I noticed some minor pilling in high-friction areas, such as under the arms and on the cuffs. However, it didn’t affect the overall performance or appearance significantly. Regular care, such as gentle washing and avoiding contact with rough surfaces, can help prolong the garment’s life.

Fit and Comfort – Alpine Onset Merino Quarter Zip

At the Range

The fit of the Outdoor Research Men’s Alpine Onset Merino Quarter Zip is true to size and offers an excellent balance between snugness and freedom of movement. The addition of spandex in the fabric blend ensures a comfortable stretch that accommodates various body types. I appreciated the articulated elbows, which allowed for unrestricted arm movement, particularly when engaging in activities like climbing or skiing.

The quarter-zip design not only provides adjustable ventilation but also allows for easy on and off. The high collar is a nice touch, as it adds warmth and protection against the elements without feeling constrictive. I found it comfortable to wear both as a base layer and as a standalone piece, depending on the weather conditions.

Versatility – Alpine Onset Merino Quarter Zip

The versatility of the Alpine Onset Merino Quarter Zip makes it a great addition to any outdoor enthusiast’s wardrobe. It functions exceptionally well as a base layer in colder weather, providing warmth and moisture management. In milder conditions, it can be worn as a standalone piece, and the quarter-zip design allows you to regulate your temperature easily. The minimalist design and available colors make it suitable for both outdoor adventures and casual wear. Whether you’re hitting the trails, heading to the office, or grabbing a coffee with friends, this quarter zip fits seamlessly into various settings.

Value – Alpine Onset Merino Quarter Zip
