AO Review: Cold Steel Recon 1 – “Pinnacle of Cool, Blast from the Past”
Patrik Orcutt 09.04.23
Here it is, one of the first knives I ever bought when I was a teenager. Back in 2009, the Cold Steel Recon 1 was the pinnacle of cool to me with its all-black design and tactical features. I remember saving all my money up over the summer to have enough to get this knife. I used it for a number of years and then moved on to other blades but this is the one I started with. It seems crazy now but I actually carried this thing in my backpack during most of my time in high school. That definitely couldn’t happen today. Recently I have brought the Recon 1 out of retirement and have been using it in EDC tasks to refresh my mind on this blade for this review.
The Cold Steel Recon 1 was purchased by myself and Cold Steel has not been allowed to preview this review.

Cold Steel Recon 1 – Review
Although superficially resembling other folding knives of its kind, the Recon 1 series boasts several unique attributes that differentiate it from the crowd. Its blades, crafted from AUS-8A stainless steel with advanced heat treatment, offer reliability and adequacy for the price. Additionally, the non-slip grip – comprising G-10 laminate scales – provides stability for everyday tasks, further accentuating the knife’s practicality. The utilization of high-strength mechanical spacers and fasteners contributes to the knife’s solid feel and durability.
Two standout features set the Recon 1 apart: the Tri-Ad locking system and the black Tuff-Ex finish on the blade. Cold Steel’s Tri-Ad system, while resembling other locking mechanisms, employs a unique stop-pin device and pressure-dampening tang to virtually eliminate lock failure. My experience confirms the lock’s flawless performance, albeit with some difficulty in disengagement initially. The Tuff-Ex finish enhances the knife’s appearance and offers corrosion prevention and lubrication when cutting tough materials.
The Recon 1 series encompasses various models, with the standard variant featuring a 4″ blade. Other models include micro (2″), mini (3″), and XL (5.5″) versions. The standard-sized blade’s edge can be plain or 50/50 (plain and serrated), while the other sizes are solely available with a plain edge. The Recon 1 series provides options for clip, spear, or tanto points, catering to both self-defense and utility-oriented users.
While the smallest Recon 1 models may not excel in self-defense, they serve as stylish utility tools and potential “first knives.” However, a notable drawback is the Tuff-Ex finish’s tendency to flake off after prolonged heavy use. Nevertheless, this appears to be more cosmetic than functional, with no substantial issues reported regarding corrosion. As counterfeit versions circulate, caution is advised when purchasing.
Cold Steel Recon 1 – Wrap Up
The Recon 1 is a seriously tough knife that offers fantastic value if you’re after a rugged folding tool without breaking the bank. I would also like to a a quick note here that I believe I paid under $100 for my Recon 1 back in 2009 and that this knife still holds a good value at its current MSRP of $175, but its important to keep in mind that the new versions of this blade come in S35-V and not AUS-8 blade steel. I found putting an edge on the AUS-8 was very easy but it won’t hold its edge as well as S35-V. At the end of the day, if you’re okay with carrying a bigger knife like the Recon 1, you’d be hard-pressed to find a folding knife that’s tougher for its size. It’s still a great choice even now.
The Recon 1 adeptly marries tactical self-defense attributes with everyday usability in a folding design. Its construction and materials are commendable, while the robust locking mechanism lives up to Cold Steel’s claims. My personal experience with the Recon 1 reinforces its performance, although I cannot vouch for its self-defense suitability. Despite the minor finish issue, the Recon 1’s array of quality features at its price point makes this concern relatively insignificant. While higher-end options like the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 or ZT 0350 might hold sway for those who can afford them, the Recon 1 series remains an excellent mid-level choice offering a comprehensive set of features.
