POTD: The Latest in Small Arm Technology – 1836 Hall Carbine

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have a follow-up to yesterday’s Photo of the Day. This is the 1836 Hall Carbine and something is notably different about it. It is percussion ignited! These popped up when the recently formed U.S. 1st Dragoons needed the newest and coolest in small arms technology. The Hall rifles were not new by any means but the whole Percussian ignition was the latest and greatest. The Dragoons got what they wanted. A compact 64 caliber percussion ignited 1836 Hall Carbine.

“Only about 2,000 of these were made and many were altered during the Civil War. It is dated “1839” on the breechblock, an “A” inspection mark on the frame, and has the other standard markings and features, including the ramrod type sliding bayonet. The buttstock appears to be marked upside down with “CA/BO” faintly. Removable collection mark on the trigger guard. These carbines were issued to the 2nd U.S. Dragoons and used by them during the Seminole Wars in Florida.”
