AllOutdoor Review: Pull Start Fire – Lightweight Firestarter for Any Weather

When it comes to survival – or even rudimentary camping for that matter – being able to start a fire is imperative. It provides warmth, can dry clothes, the smoke can keep mosquitoes away, it has a calming effect after a long day, you can purify water, and of course, prepare yourself meals. Fire is life-sustaining in many ways. There are innumerable ways to start a fire with such tools as matches, flint, a little gasoline plus a spark, and even more waterproof methods like coated/weatherproof matches or something like Pull Start Fire, a lightweight firestarter for any weather. With the simple rip/pull of a tethered rope, you can start a fire instantly against all odds. Sounds too good to be true, right?… We had similar trepidation when we heard about Pull Start Fire. Specifications: Pull Start Fire – Lightweight Firestarter

I have tried my fair share of fire starting methods over the years. Magnesium shavings and flint burns well in adverse weather, but it can be difficult to get a spark to catch a small pile of magnesium shavings. Waterproof matches are a great idea in theory… keywords being “in theory” because I have yet to find some actually reliable waterproof matches. I have even done the old school bow ‘n arrow method of quickly rubbing 2 sticks together, but again, this only works in dry, ideal conditions. Lighters can be a nice option, but if they get wet like your firewood, you can’t get your lighter going either. This is where something like the Pull Start Fire could benefit all of us. Whether this product, itself, is wet or it is super windy, this product will work.

  • No Matches or Lighters Needed
  • No Kindling Necessary
  • Lights Wet Wood
  • Windproof and Rainproof

Field Use: Pull Start Fire – Lightweight Firestarter

The Pull Start Fire is a pretty straight-forward product. On one end you have green string or cord to tie this product down to a log if you so choose. On the other end, you have red string or cord to “pull-start” the product. With a rip of the red string, smoke begins to plume out of the package like a Hollywood movie and a toasty fire erupts from the inside. There is also some “snap, crackle, and pop” that occurs like you’ve got a big bowl of Rice Krispies in front of you.

I have used the Pull Start Fire with success on all manner of materials. Everything from wet to dry to cold and everything in between. Also, I have witnessed it successfully start fires in high winds as advertised.

  • Wet or Dry Cardboard
  • Rough Lumber from Woodworking Projects
  • Disheveled Pallet Wood
  • Shredded Mail/Paper
  • Green Sticks, Twigs, Brush
  • Dry or Wet Grass Clippings

Another element of note is that Pull Start Fire advertises their product as being safe to eat over. While I cannot scientifically prove this statement to be true, I can anecdotally report that Pull Start Fire exudes a “clean” looking flame and no suspicious odor comes from this product whatsoever. Furthermore, my wife and I plus our lovely neighbors – Alex and Kelsey – have had many S’mores over these fires and we haven’t grown a 3rd arm yet (them having enjoyed a few more S’mores than me… I was probably dropped one too many times as a kid and don’t have an affinity to S’mores).

Final Thoughts: Pull Start Fire – Lightweight Firestarter

So, what are my final thoughts on the Pull Start Fire?… All in all, I like the product a lot. It does everything as advertised. Works in adverse weather, is safe to eat over, performs in high wind, and they are even entertaining. I’m a grown kid at times and I’m entertained by them, and when we started one of these off in front of some children they thought it was pretty cool, too. At an MSRP of $19.99 for a 3-pack, they are decently affordable as well.

In closing, I want to say thank you to Pull Start Fire for allowing AllOutdoor and myself the opportunity to try out their Pull Start Fire – Lightweight Firestarter. That is greatly appreciated. Also, we would like to know what all of you guys and gals think? Do you believe that the Pull Start Fire – Lightweight Firestarter is something worth spending your money on for camping, recreation, hiking, a survival backpack, or use at home? As always, let us know all of your thoughts in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback.
