POTD: It’s Basically 32 ACP – The Smith & Wesson Model 1913

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have a cool submission in the pocket pistol revolution. This is the Smith & Wesson Model 1913. The Smith and Wesson Model 1913 in .35 Auto was manufactured between 1913 and 1921 to compete against Colt’s .32 ACP chambered Colt 1903 Pocket Hammerless and the later Model 1908 in .380 ACP. The handgun’s notable feature was its “innovative” cartridge. The 35 Smith & Wesson Auto cartridge is basically the same as the 32 aCP cartridge but the bullet geometry differs slightly. However, this very aspect became its downfall, leading to its swift discontinuation due to a lack of success.

“Manufactured from 1913 to 1921, with a total production of 8,350. The top of the frame is marked with the three line address/patent dates flanked by Maltese crosses, and also flanked by crosses “35 S&W AUTO CTG” on the left side of the barrel. The left rear of the frame is marked with the S&W Trademark logo and the serial number appears on the front strap. Blade front and frame notch rear sights, seven round detachable magazine and fitted with smooth walnut grips with inlaid S&W medallions. Complete with the original box numbered to the gun, with correct end label and directions sheet affixed to the inside of the lid.”
