POTD: Australian Design, American Made – The Bushmaster M17S Bullpup

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have an Australian-designed and American-made bullpup. This is the Bushmaster M17S and it was one of the first “American” bullpups to enter the US market (at least in the format we are familiar with. it all started with an Australian company producing a very similar design for Australian military trials that would decide the Steyr AUG as the winner. The company producing these went under and an American company took up the mantel before also going bankrupt. As a result, Bushmaster got involved and began producing the Bushmaster M17S which posed itself as an affordable new and cool rifle. the downside is the whole modern bullpup craze had not quite taken hold and with the 1994 AWB it hindered sales slightly and the M17S was not meant to be.
