[SHOT 2023] NEW from Norma: New NXD Calibers & Xtreme LR-22
Eugene L. 01.27.23
This year at SHOT Show Norma Precision Inc. has bought out a couple of new things to the market. First, they introduced a few new calibers for their NXD line of defensive pistol ammunition, and second the Xtreme LR-22 a long-range .22lr round. The NXD is a solid copper-polymer projectile that is made with injection molding. The round has three distinctive channels instead of a hollow point, so it can’t be clogged with fabric in use.
Instead of expansion, the round acts as a hydrodynamic ram to transfer energy into the target, the three channels in the round cause a venturi effect upon impact causing a secondary HRAM event to cause even further trauma to the tissues. The NXD round, Non-eXpanding Defense, has been available for a little while already but only in 9mm. Now Norma has expanded the line to include .380acp, .40S&W, .45acp, .38 special, and 10mm. .380acp is available now in stores, the other calibers should be available before the end of Quarter 2 of this year.
Norma is also releasing a crazy new .22lr round for this year, when you hear .22lr you usually don’t think of long-range shooting. But Norma is here to change that notion with its new Xtreme LR-22, a round that they are claiming is capable of hitting up to 1000 yards. While not 1000 yards, with some rough testing with a Tikka t1x with a hunting optic, the round has proven itself capable of 12-inch groups at 450 yards. With a competition prs Vudu rifle with a night force they were constantly making hits on a 12-inch plate at 600 yards.
The Xtreme LR-22 is capable of these sorts of ranges due to its unique design. The bullets come in at 43 grains and have an elongated tip for better aerodynamics. The base of the bullets is unique as well with the world’s first rocket tail base. This lets the round still seal properly as it’s fired but has the stabilizing effects of a boat tail. Out of a 20-inch barrel, the Xtreme-LR-22 is going 1175fps out of the muzzle. While not available just yet, it should be in the next few months. It’s not every day you hear about a .22lr regularly making hits out at a 1000yds so if this holds true the new Xtreme-LR-22 holds tons of potential in the .22lr PRS world.
