Kentucky Magnet Fisherman Lands Explosive Catch: Live 40mm Grenade!

Earlier this month on December 4th in the town of Cadiz Kentucky, the local Cadiz Kentucky Police Department had to close down a local road and call in the bomb squad. That day a local magnet fisherman managed to snag a live 40mm grenade out of the Little River off the South Road Bridge. Realizing what they had pulled up they contacted the local police department. Who in turn called in a bomb squad from Fort Campbell.

When Fort Campbell EOD arrived on scene they determined that the grenade was not stable enough for transport due to possible water intrusion. So, the EOD team used a explosive charge to destroy the unstable 40mm grenade on scene. The Trigg County Sheriff’s Office posted this on their page in response to the situation:

As you may already be aware, South Road, between US68 and Main Street, is currently closed. An object, believed to be a 40mm grenade, was located by someone magnet fishing on the bridge.

Fort Campbell EOD is on scene, assisting in the removal of the device. They are working diligently to safely remove the device from the area. It is possible that the device will be “destroyed in place” if it is determined it can’t be safely moved. The area EOD is working in is free of businesses and residences, so there is no need for any closures or evacuations.

Officers are on scene and coordinating with EOD, and will make dispatch aware of any changes in the situation. We will provide updates, if needed.

We ask that all citizens remain clear of the area and find alternate routes to navigate around downtown, until we provide notice that the roadway is reopened. Thank you!!

Surprisingly enough though this was not the only 40mm grenade to come out of the river this month. Because a couple weeks later another magnet fisherman snagged another 40mm grenade in the same area of the Little River in Cadiz Kentucky as the first grenade on the 4th. The road again was shut down and the Fort Campbell Bomb was called out once again to deal with the grenade. In this case they found the 40mm grenade was still stable enough to be transported back on base for destruction. Both of the grenades were destroyed with no issue.

South Road, between US68 and Main Street, is currently closed as another grenade was pulled from the river by an individual magnet fishing.

Fort Campbell EOD is on their way to the scene. They intend to destroy the grenade on scene, so you will once again hear an explosion, most likely in the next hour or so. The area EOD is working in is free of businesses and residences, so there is no need for any closures or evacuations.

We ask that all citizens remain clear of the area and find alternate routes to navigate around downtown, until we provide notice that the roadway is reopened. Thank you!!
