POTD: The Unknown SAA Alloy 22 – Hawes Western Marshal

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have a single-action revolver that is similar to many of its time and also a more relevant example of today’s offerings as well. This is a J.P. Sauer & Sohn Western Marshal (also referred to as the Hawes Western Marshal). This revolver is featured in today’s Curious Relics segment so if you want to know more about it in depth make sure to check that out. Besides that, I wanted to talk about how common revolvers like this were back in the day and how similar it is to today’s offerings. Back in the late 1950s and 1960s, the United States saw an influx of single-action revolvers. This mostly has to do with all of the new western-style movies and tv shows coming out starting in the 1940s and going through the 1970s. Colt’s very own Single Action Army was expensive and the company took a bit of a break from making them so they were tough to get. Manufacturers from home and abroad brought clones scaled down and up to compete. These days we have guns from Heritage, Ruger, Chiappa, etc that make pot metal 22 revolvers and a large chunk of Italian companies that make larger centerfire versions. Very little has changed, there are a lot of parallels!
