Eivin Kilcher’s Unique Son-Toting Backpack
Russ Chastain 10.01.18
I’ve long been a fan of the TV show Alaska: The Last Frontier, and I just saw a short preview of the upcoming new season of the program. It was of course packed with all kinds of hijinks and adventure, but what struck me most was the way Eivin Kilcher was transporting his son Findlay during a big game hunt.
I snapped a couple of photos of the TV, just so I could share them here with you.
We’ve learned from the show that Eivin is a hardcore hunter and is no stranger to long exhausting hikes. So when he wants to share the hunt with his little boy, he must improvise — if not, little Findlay could never keep up with him.
What does he do? He dons a backpack with a sizable platform, on which Findlay can stand while holding on. The places the boy’s head even higher than his father’s, giving him a superb view of the rugged Alaskan landscape — and potentially allowing him to spot animals even before his father’s trained eye can pick them out.
Pretty cool! It’s no wonder the young ‘un is smiling while he rides. I’m looking forward to the actual episode, so I can learn more about this cool setup. The new season (8) will premier on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at 9:00 PM on Discovery.
What a great way to introduce a young person to hunting. Although I’d be happier if that rifle was being carried differently…
