After ten careful and time-consuming coats of Lin-Speed, this was the result: dull spots that simply would not go away.
I endeavored to fill any “thirsty” grain by steel-wooling each “technically dry” coat to lower the high areas and leave it in the low ones. This fits in with the Lin-Speed notion that says their finish is IN the wood rather than ON it.
Giving up on Gloss
Right about this time, I decided that trying to get a glossy finish was not the thing to do. For one thing, it just wasn’t working, and for another, the company owner himself had told me it wouldn’t happen. Duh.
If you do want a glossy finish, Lin-Speed recommends you use mineral spirits to thin the product for the final coats.
I took two weeks to apply these ten coats of Lin-Speed oil.
