Watch: Pedersoli 20 gauge Howdah Pistol
Kevin Felts 07.10.17
The Howdah is a large caliber pistol designed for protection against lions and tigers. In this example, it is a double barrel shotgun pistol. During the video, hickok45 talks about how the Howdah was carried by people who may have been riding elephants. Rather than trying to maneuver a full sized rifle or shotgun to ward off an attacking lion or tiger, the Howdah was developed.
Davide Pedersoli & C. is an Italian firearms company that was founded in 1957. They specialize in black powder firearms and have a reputation for quality. Along with the Howdah pistol, Pedersoli manufactures replicas of the Sharps and various lever action rifles.

Before watching the video, I did not know what a “Howdah Pistol” was. While watching the first part of the video, I thought it was a short barrel modern shotgun. Then I saw the black powder supplies on the table.
I was rather disappointed that it was not a modern double barrel shotgun in 20 gauge. Then again, the ATF does not classify black powder as a modern firearm. Be sure to check your state and local regulations.
Overall, I was impressed with the pattern of the Howdah Pistol. It seems to be perfect for what it was designed to do.
